Purpose of the content

Trinket File publishes general information about jewellery, watches and accessories: materials, construction, buying, repair and care. The content is educational. It is written to help you ask better questions, not to give you a personalised assessment of a specific piece.

No personalised advice or valuation

What a piece is made of, whether it has been repaired, whether a stone is what it is claimed to be, and what it is worth can only be established by examining and testing it. None of that is possible from a web page. A guide that describes a hallmark, a metal or a setting is describing a general rule, not assessing your item.

We do not provide valuations, appraisals or investment advice, and nothing on this site should be read as any of those things. For a valuation, an insurance schedule, a probate matter or a sale, consult a qualified appraiser or valuer who can inspect the piece in person. For stone identification, consult a gemmologist or a gemmological laboratory. For a repair, a resize or a watch service, consult a jeweller, watchmaker or workshop that can handle the piece.

Accuracy and change

Manufacturers change materials, plating specifications and constructions without notice, hallmarking practice varies between countries, and standards are revised. We aim to be accurate when we publish and to correct errors when they are found, but we cannot guarantee that every detail remains current or applies to the piece in front of you.
